Good Morning! BUTCH DIVA featured in today's New York Post. Pg. 28... I got an email from the manager at Patricia Field last week telling me to look out for this. It's pretty cool how they've been keeping open communication with me about all the coverage, from Kelis buying the money printed jumpsuit, to all the mannequins being dressed in Butch Diva, to the stylists pulling Butch Diva pieces, and most recently, this ad...
...I got outta the train the other day and was stopped dead in my tracks by these installations along Broadway, a few blocks long btwn like 40th and 38th st...these were just a few that moved me most...I didn't quite get much info on the artists/designers because I was rushing on the go, but wanted to share. Although I've become known for the girl with the crazeeey spandex - I often think back to my days in college when I had to drape technical patterns, and study tailoring, and the history of fashion and yada yada - so when I see work such as this, I can really appreciate it...ahhh exhaaaale. then off to stack up on spandex. lmao.
I googled "future fashion" and these are some of the shots that caught my eye. All in efforts to find inspiration that was fresh, ahead of it's time, and maybe just MAYBE- original! I'm so not in the mood for the cookie cutter predictable boring only hot for the moment type ish. I need more innovation, freshness, and fast fwd thinking around me...
c'mon now.
The current dominating trends seem to be studs + spikes, shoulder pads, lingerie inspired, or mirror images of rihanna and gaga. Fashion is all about trends what's hot vs what's not, but for me it's also about igniting emotion, inspiration, and contributing something that no else has. There are very very few celebs that dress themselves, more often than not they have someone creating a look for them and they just roll with it. The industry is losing full sight or the art that comes with creating. We need less clones, and more risk takers!
There is a large population of young designers trying to break thru and make a name for themselves - cool no probs. But resources are now so easily accessible, reality shows give you the impression that you can just walk into a fabric store with a vision and then your a designer. NO! This biz is not just all about what you see on the surface or what's the best you can do with a yard of fabric. It's about thinking outta the box, strategy, planning ahead, making a look your own, technical biz, and accommodating a customer's needs beyond what they "just expect" but what they neeeeed!
Kinda why I slowed down on posting too much of the fashion and editorial that I came across on other blogs...it may have been visually stimulating but to re-blog would only be to copy and copying just not the look I'm going for. On that note... feels good to know YOU need BUTCH DIVA!
I refuse to buy magazines anymore...unless I'm overwhelmingly inspired!! Otherwise there just ain't nothin doing it for me in the publications these days. Lame ad campaigns, weak styling, and redundant play it safe boring collections. I flip thru dozens of magazines in Barnes + Noble only to leave with a few snap shots of looks I digged... Siggh.
None the less...this is why I suppose I stay confined to my walls of Spandex + Chaos..surrounded by something original, colorful, bold, fearless, full of life, and rewarding. I actually use to blog a whole lot more imagery of things I would come across that inspired but in trying to keep up with the blog hard knock life, I found that everybody be pretty much bloggin the same damn thing...same fashion, same editorials, same videos etc etc. And since I don't follow I lead, I chose to keep it original in blogging more BUTCH DIVA content than anything...
Would love to sit here longer and rant + rave about more fashion politics but gotta get back to work...just didn't want you to think I was neglecting you. :)
Soooo - I was up late last night, nothing new, browsing archive Alexander McQueen footage as I find his work has been very therapeutic for me, and I came across these interviews, in which the number of viewers actually shocked me because it wasn't many at all. McQueen has rarely ever done such long interviews and he's known to be very private, so watching these literally made the hairs on my body stand at attention...
I can sooooooooooo relate @ the 8:52 mark..."do you get fustrated often your brain seems to go faster than your mouth? ....it's the nature of the beast."
I literally took notes...and here are some of the things he said that stood out most to me... "You have to think of a way of communicating your company + brand in a more personal way..more direct to the customer.."
"With any kind of business it has to progress and move on..."
"bring emotion + connection to the garment..."
"Today is all about speed...and you have to be a fast runner"
"It's about breaking down barriers...shows are a form of entertainment not just a commercial...it keeps me interested in the evolution of fashion ...motivates me to see an illusion in my head, then to see the actual thing live."
"I don' think it makes sense to play it safe in these times, the world needs fantasy, have enough reality..."
"if I start off weak, I can't go above but if I start of high I can nail it down..."
"making clothes not just part of a wardrobe but part of a person.."

I think the most emotional part is realizing I share so many of the same values and beliefs about this industry and what it takes to push boundaries, with a genius whose mastered it. He even said his Spring 1999 show was the only one he ever cried for meanwhile when I first saw the footage from that show, I boo hoo'd like somebody had died!!! I was so creativly overwhelmed by it that it became the sole inspiration behind my "Canvas + Chaos" exhibit last summer!
...For a brief moment I was feeling empty, incomplete, lost, confused, and alone... and its the constant reminder that I'm doing what I love, I have endless passion for it, and I couldn't see myself doing anything else that wheels me back in. Like 'WAKE UP TIFFANY - U GOT THIS'...I remind myself of all that I've accomplished and all that's still out there for me to dip my paws into...and it gets my act together. QUICKLY.
They asked him "what's the most exciting thing you've ever stolen"...and he said all giddy like, "someone's heart". Not only was that answer breathtaking... but now I wonder if it was MY heart he stole...
Let the good times roll! So sad to see, yet so happy to say we rolled up to a crowd dressed mainly in all black in celebration of Damon Peruzzi's birthday {wtf?? we thought we were at the wrong party for a sec!!} We walk in and Shay got the exact reaction she wanted from the crowd > "who the fuck do these bitches think they are?" LOL. We live for that. :)
