"What/Who inspires your line?

The everyday women that want to wear it. I’m definitely inspired by seeing how people put my stuff together, in ways that I would’ve never originally thought of. I like to think that I have a little bit of something for every female and seeing how excited they get when they see the color, the prints, the shapes- all that inspires me.

What makes your line unique?

The customized options. I offer ready to wear exclusives in a collection called Spandex + Chaos, however I also do custom designing and that allows me to create one of kind versions and add to my design archive. It’s the custom classics that make Butch Diva.

Who inspires you/your style the most?

I don’t think there is a physical person that inspires me or my style the most, I feel like style is what you make it, and any effort to be unique or set a trend can be considered “style”. I personally tend to dress according to my mood or the occasion. There are days I dress like I’m a married house wife, days I dress straight hood rat, days I dress like I own a bank, days I dress like a dance hall queen, a designer, an artist, a hippie, whatever floats my boat. Designing a lifestyle collection means creating for a diverse agenda, so reality and life’s experiences inspire me to do that.

What qualities do you posses as a fashion designer?

I’m not afraid to take risks, I consider functional details and comfort. I’m easy on the wallet and I know what women want.

Where do you get your edgy ideas from?

Experience. Knowing what’s hot, whats not, and whats straight cheesy…I take inspiration from designer archives from time to time and modify it in spandex, thats always fun!..."

I feel so honored to be recognized as such an influencial designer from Brooklyn. BK is where I grew up, and it's where I couldn't wait to get back to...something about Brooklyn that really inspires me and all the color that I put into my work. It's diverse, full of energy, so many wonders in so many shapes and sizes, so much of what Butch Diva thrives on...ahhhhh. i love.

...I got outta the train the other day and was stopped dead in my tracks by these installations along Broadway, a few blocks long btwn like 40th and 38th st...these were just a few that moved me most...I didn't quite get much info on the artists/designers because I was rushing on the go, but wanted to share. Although I've become known for the girl with the crazeeey spandex - I often think back to my days in college when I had to drape technical patterns, and study tailoring, and the history of fashion and yada yada - so when I see work such as this, I can really appreciate it...ahhh exhaaaale. then off to stack up on spandex. lmao.

Mind if I go off @ the mouf for a min…
Sitting at my desk with my legs up on the cpu wishing I had a plush ottoman right about now. My knees achy from standing in the same spot for past few days cutting the re-order for Patricia Field, and FINALLY getting the opportunity to get to some brand SPANKIN new product prepped for the next sample sale…for which I don’t wanna give away too much…but may be type fckin monumental steez. It took a lot for me to not want everything for myself! But it’s tooooooo cute not to share so stay tuned on sample sale deets.

On another note, cutting all this stuff and working alone has been quite an experience to say the least. I spend most days with pandora stations of Etta James, Stevie Wonder, Tony Terry type stuff blasting in the studio. Making me feel all kinds of emotions, setting the mood for me to fall deeper in love with Butch Diva I suppose. It seems as tho I continue to take on more responsibility rather than delegating it...everyone always tells me you gotta find people to do stuff for you, find people find people....HA! that's a bigger cliche with every day that passes - but I persevere. Building Butch Diva from the ground up all by my lonesome has surely sped up the learning process and I've only become stronger mentally as a entrepreneur, and even with creative direction. But I must say there are days I yearrrn sooo badd for a power team of bright eyed and bushy tailed go getters. A group of like minds that want it as much as I want it. People that understand the principles of what it takes to grow strategically and are willing to put in the time and genuine efforts to be a part of the rising movement that is Butch Diva's Spandex + Chaos. I go in over time day after day and at times just wish there was a team of people to share the success with- that's all! :) I am my WHOLE damn team. From A-Z. No need to list all the roles and plays thru out the day and night but if I don’t get the job done- it won’t get don’t at all. Period.

Because it only makes me appreciate it all more, I say this to encourage not to boast. Because you really really have to love it to want to give it your everything, no matter how many disappointments, let downs, discouraging feedback, or even return on investment…if you love it, believe in, and can focus on a plan to make it happen, you’re on a great track and you will only begin your journey willing to live + learn. My mind processes so many thoughts in a mere second and even tho I'm obviously living in the moment, I'm just as equally still remembering the past and always and fo'eva planning for the future. Life can take you in so many different directions inevitably OR you can choose your own path. But one thing you should never do - is give up on a dream...

I googled "future fashion" and these are some of the shots that caught my eye. All in efforts to find inspiration that was fresh, ahead of it's time, and maybe just MAYBE- original! I'm so not in the mood for the cookie cutter predictable boring only hot for the moment type ish. I need more innovation, freshness, and fast fwd thinking around me...

c'mon now.

The current dominating trends seem to be studs + spikes, shoulder pads, lingerie inspired, or mirror images of rihanna and gaga. Fashion is all about trends what's hot vs what's not, but for me it's also about igniting emotion, inspiration, and contributing something that no else has. There are very very few celebs that dress themselves, more often than not they have someone creating a look for them and they just roll with it. The industry is losing full sight or the art that comes with creating. We need less clones, and more risk takers!

There is a large population of young designers trying to break thru and make a name for themselves - cool no probs. But resources are now so easily accessible, reality shows give you the impression that you can just walk into a fabric store with a vision and then your a designer. NO! This biz is not just all about what you see on the surface or what's the best you can do with a yard of fabric. It's about thinking outta the box, strategy, planning ahead, making a look your own, technical biz, and accommodating a customer's needs beyond what they "just expect" but what they neeeeed!

Kinda why I slowed down on posting too much of the fashion and editorial that I came across on other blogs...it may have been visually stimulating but to re-blog would only be to copy and copying just not the look I'm going for. On that note... feels good to know YOU need BUTCH DIVA!

So after runnin round fabric district all day yesterday, deliveries, fittings, follow ups, and all that jazz...I packed a case of spandex + goodness to take over to Contessa Stuto for her shoot to promote the next "Whore House" shindig.

Not a bad way to spend a Thursday night > surrounded by girls, girls, and more girls... playin dress up in my spandex, clothes flyin, nipples peekin, booty's shakin, camera's flashin, and all dat dutty spice that comes with this package deal...

I don't know what's funnier, Charlie's antics filming me, Sherry's production manager swag, my nerd steez, or the glare from my gums cheeeeeeezin like crazy! But I gots every reason to! It was either tears or cheeze smiles and since I'ma soilder I went for the smiles. :) Survival of the fittest menng.

Share the moment with me....I've waited a looooong time for this... I used to stomp the streets of the garment district all day coordinating production for designers such as Catherine Malandrino, Alice + Olivia, TSE, America Eagle, fabric development for Ralph Lauren... and the list goes on...but now I'm in the position coordinating my own factory production. I said HOTT Dayyum. :)

The past few weeks have been challenging I tell ya! As people come and go, as my buttons get pushed, as orders pile up, as hours of sleep get less, as weight drops, as eye sight gets weaker...yada yada but I persevere. When you can see it so close, taste it so clear, feel it so deep, nothin else matters. Just wanna make it to the finish line if a finish line even exists...cuz trust I could do this all day errrv day! I love my BUTCH DIVA.

I don't know how to do anything else but create and think BIG. So I guess I'm stuck in a place where success is inevitable. Darn...

I refuse to buy magazines anymore...unless I'm overwhelmingly inspired!! Otherwise there just ain't nothin doing it for me in the publications these days. Lame ad campaigns, weak styling, and redundant play it safe boring collections. I flip thru dozens of magazines in Barnes + Noble only to leave with a few snap shots of looks I digged... Siggh.

None the less...this is why I suppose I stay confined to my walls of Spandex + Chaos..surrounded by something original, colorful, bold, fearless, full of life, and rewarding. I actually use to blog a whole lot more imagery of things I would come across that inspired but in trying to keep up with the blog hard knock life, I found that everybody be pretty much bloggin the same damn thing...same fashion, same editorials, same videos etc etc. And since I don't follow I lead, I chose to keep it original in blogging more BUTCH DIVA content than anything...

Would love to sit here longer and rant + rave about more fashion politics but gotta get back to work...just didn't want you to think I was neglecting you. :)

Boy I tell ya! It be straight manual labor up in this joint! I mean I've never been one scuurred of a lil hard work but the last few days have been rest + meal less. I've somehow survived off old school love songs, spandex, and the ambiance of my studio. Thank goodness for a background in production and product development, I was able to get thru the prep process of putting my first order into production. I got to revisit my pattern making and cutting skills, and therefore even more reason to cherish the accomplishment. I miss school....NOOTTTT!!!

Life gave lemons. I make sweeeeeeeet lemonade. :)

Soooo - I was up late last night, nothing new, browsing archive Alexander McQueen footage as I find his work has been very therapeutic for me, and I came across these interviews, in which the number of viewers actually shocked me because it wasn't many at all. McQueen has rarely ever done such long interviews and he's known to be very private, so watching these literally made the hairs on my body stand at attention...

I can sooooooooooo relate @ the 8:52 mark..."do you get fustrated often your brain seems to go faster than your mouth? ....it's the nature of the beast."

I literally took notes...and here are some of the things he said that stood out most to me...
"You have to think of a way of communicating your company + brand in a more personal way..more direct to the customer.."

"With any kind of business it has to progress and move on..."

"bring emotion + connection to the garment..."

"Today is all about speed...and you have to be a fast runner"

"It's about breaking down barriers...shows are a form of entertainment not just a commercial...it keeps me interested in the evolution of fashion ...motivates me to see an illusion in my head, then to see the actual thing live."

"I don' think it makes sense to play it safe in these times, the world needs fantasy, have enough reality..."

"if I start off weak, I can't go above but if I start of high I can nail it down..."

"making clothes not just part of a wardrobe but part of a person.."

I think the most emotional part is realizing I share so many of the same values and beliefs about this industry and what it takes to push boundaries, with a genius whose mastered it. He even said his Spring 1999 show was the only one he ever cried for meanwhile when I first saw the footage from that show, I boo hoo'd like somebody had died!!! I was so creativly overwhelmed by it that it became the sole inspiration behind my "Canvas + Chaos" exhibit last summer!

...For a brief moment I was feeling empty, incomplete, lost, confused, and alone... and its the constant reminder that I'm doing what I love, I have endless passion for it, and I couldn't see myself doing anything else that wheels me back in. Like 'WAKE UP TIFFANY - U GOT THIS'...I remind myself of all that I've accomplished and all that's still out there for me to dip my paws into...and it gets my act together. QUICKLY.

They asked him "what's the most exciting thing you've ever stolen"...and he said all giddy like, "someone's heart". Not only was that answer breathtaking... but now I wonder if it was MY heart he stole...
